How To Improve A Child’s Reading Comprehension

To improve a child’s reading comprehension, they must first become inspired about reading. To help inspire children to read, the parent must create motivation and interest. So let’s first consider this question.

What is the purpose of reading?

The purpose of reading is to connect the words on the page to what we already know. If you don’t know anything about a subject, then you don’t retain much. But if you do, you have a framework in your mind for reading, understanding and storing information. For example, if you like films then reading film reviews is easy. Therefore, good reading equals building frameworks for connecting words to thoughts.

Connecting words to thoughts

A child may be crazy about Spiderman. As he/she already has knowledge and interest in the subject, he/she is able to connect the words to his/her thoughts. In other words the child has comprehension or beginning to comprehend what is on the page.

Simple reading comprehension activities will test a child’s comprehension of what they have just read. For example the parent can ask questions about the text in order to identify the main ideas and to draw conclusions. Or ask the child to draw a picture of say the main character from the description they have just read. For a livelier approach, the child answers the question by acting it out. Drama is a great teaching tool, as topics can be explored further with the use of role-play

Listening comprehension

It is also important for parents to realize that learning to read begins at an early age because a child learns to read by being read to. First comes listening comprehension followed by reading comprehension. Babies and young toddlers will usually take an interest in the look and feel of a book and this should be encouraged and developed. Showing the book to the child, flipping through the pages, looking at the pictures and talking about the book is in its very early stages a reading comprehension activity. It is never to early for a child to develop a love of books!

In summary

Read aloud to the child. This activity increases listening comprehension, which must come first before reading comprehension.

Choose or let the child choose reading material that is already of interest to them. Reading comprehension requires motivation, interest, mental frameworks for holding ideas and concentration.

Ask the child questions about the story or piece of text they have read. Comprehension questions help children identify the main idea and draw conclusion.

7 Speed Reading Tips That Make a Difference

Speed reading is one of the most important skills to acquire these days. There are some speed reading tips that will allow you to make the most out of your speed reading. I have gathered seven of the most powerful ones to make a difference in speed and comprehension.

Speed Reading Tips

1. Before reading any book, skim through the table of contents to get an overview of the book. This is a tip that will let you get an idea of the book and connect ideas in your mind. In some books you can even by-pass chapters you don’t find useful.

2. Relax before reading. Make reading a pleasurable activity by relaxing your mind and body. Too much stress and worries and you won’t be able to retain info

3. Focus on the key words. Around 60 percent of the content is made of words used to structure a sentence.

4. Read a book with more “meat” and less “fluff”. Books rich in content go to the point immediately without wasting your time going over the same things and decorating words aimlessly.

5. Set goals and be determined. Patience is a key factor for honing your skills. Set increasing goals as you feel comfortable to do so. There’s no need to be Flash in just one session. Take it with ease.

6. Increase your vocabulary. As you find unknown words, look for them in the dictionary and add them to your language. The more words you understand the fastest reading will become.

7. Practice like a madman or madwoman! The techniques must be understood and perfected. This is only possible with a lot of practice like with any skill. Soon enough, you’ll be able to read a lot faster than your current speed.

Remember that you can take speed reading to the max, so don’t hold yourself back and stick to these speed reading tips. But always test yourself to see if you comprehend the text. Speed reading is useless if you can’t comprehend and retain. Good luck!

5 Qualities of a Good Special Education Advocate

Are you the parent of a child with autism that is having a dispute with school personnel, and would like some help? Are you the parent of a child with a learning disability, or another type of disability, that could use an advocate to help you in getting an appropriate education for your child? This article will give you 5 qualities that make a good special education advocate

An advocate is a person that has received special training, that helps parents navigate the special education system. In some cases the advocate is a parent of a child themselves, but this is not always the case. Before you hire an advocate check on their experience, and also make sure that the advocate is familiar with your child’s disability, so that they are able to advocate effectively

Qualities:

1 A good advocate must be familiar with the federal and state education laws that apply to special education, and be willing to use them, when needed. This is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), State rules for special education (how they will comply with IDEA), and No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The advocate does not have to memorize the laws, but should have a basic knowledge of what is in them. The advocate must also be willing to bring up the laws, at IEP meetings, if this will benefit the child.

2. A good advocate should not make false promises to parents. If an advocate tells you. that they will get the services that you want for your child, be leery! Unfortunately, there are no guarantees in special education, and advocates should not promise things that they may not be able to get. An experienced advocate who knows the law and your school district, should have a sense about what can be accomplished.

3. A good advocate should be passionate about your child, and the educational services that they need. Advocacy sometimes takes a lot of time. If the person helping you is not passionate about your child, they may not be willing to help you for the length of time that it takes to get your child an appropriate education.

4. A good advocate must be willing to stand up to special education personnel, when they disagree with them, or when the school personnel tell a lie. If the advocate you pick, has every quality, but is not willing to stand up to school personnel, he or she will not be an effective advocate for your child.

5. A good advocate is detail oriented, and makes sure that any services promised by special education personnel, are put in writing. A good advocate will read the IEP before they leave the meeting, and bring up any changes that should be made. Sometimes the little details are what makes for success!

By keeping in mind these 5 qualities, you will be better equipped to finding an advocate that will be able to help you, get an appropriate education for your child.

Top Tips For Teaching Adult Learners

The term adult learner can be applied to anyone from 18 to 108. Usually, however, the term is used to mean adults who have not studied for since leaving school or college.

When teaching adults, remember that they don’t have to come to your classes. They will attend if they find the classes fun and interesting and they feel they are learning something.

My top tips are aimed at teachers working in a classic “Evening Class” situation. Usually lessons once a week with each lesson lasting for about 2 hours.

Tip 1. Encourage the members of your class to interact.

Tip 2. Always have a refreshment break.

Adult students will be motivated to continue coming to your classes is that they are enjoying them and making friends. A refreshment break and encouraging interaction helps the students to get to know each other. No-one can concentrate fully for 2 hours anyway. You may think a break is a waste of valuable teaching time, I can assure you that it is not.

Tip 3. Make the classes fun. Your students don’t want to spend 2 hours each week in your company if you are straight faced, serious and boring. Sound as if you enjoy your subject, then your students will enjoy it too.

Tip 4. If at all possible, talk to your students on the phone before the first class. Potential students who haven’t studied for years, or have had a bad experience at school may be apprehensive and undecided about attending. Talking to them allows you to explain that the class will not be like school, it will be relaxed and friendly. Really nervous students will be appreciate you taking time to talk to them. It will help overcome their initial fear. They will come to the first class feeling that they already know you.

Tip 5. If you are holding your classes in a local school it is likely that some of your students attended there as youngsters. They may find returning particularly daunting. Be relaxed and friendly and relaxed, allow them time and space to settle, and allow them to talk about their previous experiences there.

Tip 6. Make time in each class to talk to every student. It is easy to allow your attention to be engaged by the assertive students and ignore the quiet ones. Don’t. Even if a student says they don’t need help, take time to sit with them, talk to them, get to know them, monitor their progress and encourage them.

Tip 7. Remember that very much older students might learn more slowly. This can be frustrating for the student - especially if the student was a fast learner in younger days. Remind them learning more slowly is normal, assure them that you don’t mind if they learn more slowly than younger members of the class and encourage them to reflect on what they have learnt.

Tip 8. Remember that your students have lives. If they are late arriving at your class there is probably a good reason. It isn’t helpful to be rude to them. I well remember attending a course myself a few years ago. I was delayed in a meeting at work and was late leaving. Then I was caught in traffic. As soon as I arrived home I ate a sandwich and went straight to my class. Did the tutor look pleased to see me? No - all he said was “Do please try to be on time”. Needless to say I didn’t return to the classes.

Tip 9. Don’t be afraid to ask your students how they feel the course is going. If you have been friendly and got to know your students they should feel they will feel they can give you an honest answer. I always try to allow my students to do this If they aren’t happy, ask them what they would like you to change - and change it! Don’t feel embarrassed, or feel you have been criticized. It is a huge chance to improve your teaching and/or the content of your course. You will be a better teacher and you will have happier students.

Physical Therapy Online - A Great Option

Online physical therapy schools are designed for the practicing, licensed physical therapist to earn continuing education credits, or as a transitional offering to those who desire to acquire a higher level degree.

Today’s Internet is promising to physical therapists who are working a full schedule and don’t have the extra energy or time to travel to a distant college campus. Online physical therapy courses are now offered at a variety of virtual campuses that primarily exist to accommodate the demanding schedule of the working professional. Many provide entry-level skills for those wishing to enter the field as a physical therapy aide.

Educational opportunities in physical therapy are present throughout the World Wide Web at mainstream colleges and online schools. To earn a doctorate in physical therapy is no longer a tedious task. With the modern innovation of the Internet, prospective students can now attend online schools to gain the necessary skills and education to further enhance job prospects.

Candidates who wish to further their education online should understand that online courses in physical therapy are chiefly developed for those already practicing in the field. Some classes that may be included in a physical therapy online course involve clinical reasoning, diagnostic procedures for rehabilitation professionals, educational theory and practice, evidence-based practice, health promotion and wellness, and health care management.

Students who have completed a physical therapy course, and have attained a Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree, may go on to transform their professional lives by entering the fields of administration, research or teaching.

Top 5 Tips For Online Education About Chiropractor Audit Risk And Coding Compliance

Dr. Ben Lerner, founder of  Teach The World About Chiropractic  and author of  “One Minute Wellness,” discovered a convenient way to educate thousands of chiropractors about coding compliance and audit risk reduction. “Compliance maintenance requires special skills and military discipline,” says Dr. Lerner. “Webinars are ideal for audit risk management instruction because they deliver urgently needed education but require minimal investment in terms of time and cost.”

Webinar combines Internet and phone technology to bring together multiple geographically dispersed participants to interact in the same conversation while viewing the same visuals. Visuals may include slides or interactive computer application. Webinars are especially useful for remote training situations, where the student is asked to follow instructor’s direction immediately and compare the results in real time. Historically, live webinars attract 10 to 300 participants and dozens more access the archives.

Archived events may be viewed as PDF with MP3 audio or via the Web with streaming audio at a time that is convenient, making it simple and efficient for doctors to share valuable information with the rest of the team - or listen again to a session to pick up tips and hints that might have been missed the first time.

1. Who Needs a Webinar on Billing Audit Risk?

According to Improper Medicare FFS Payment Report (2003), “Chiropractors have the highest provider compliance error rate in Medicare, filing claims incorrectly 30.6% of the time.”

“No insurance company offers protection against potentially enormous penalties in case of post-payment audit,” says Jeff Randolph, Esq., Legal Counsel to the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors. The severity of provider penalties following post-payment audit have escalated in the past two to three years from relatively non-adversarial audits and occasional return of payments to very high fines, suspension or loss of license, and imprisonment.

If any chiropractic practice has a 30.6% chance of being audited and no insurance offers protection against audit risk, then the only rational way to protect the practice is to develop an in-house audit defense strategy.

The primary objective of a chiropractic audit webinar is to train practice owners and managers in simple and effective techniques to reduce both the risk for an audit and potential penalties in case of an audit.

The secondary objective of the webinar is to train practice owners and managers efficient practice management techniques, leveraging modern Internet-based Vericle technologies.

2. Target Audience

Chiropractic clinic owners and managers already using Vericle technologies would benefit the most from presented information because they would be able to apply the newly acquired knowledge immediately in their practice. Practice owners without access to powerful Vericle technology, would benefit from an in-depth discussion about rapid SOAP notes generation, effective and compliant coding, and automated audit exposure monitoring.

3. Expert Content

Prepared by the authors of “The Business of Healthcare Provider Audits” (forthcoming in Today’s Chiropractic), this specialized Webinar on Billing Audit Risk reflects years of cumulative experience of hundreds of doctors and post-payment audits. Hundreds of chiropractors have attended its live prototype seminar “How to Hang Onto Your Money,” developed initially for “Teach The World About Chiropractic.”

The benefits of participating in the medical billing audit risk webinar are three fold:

* Improved efficiency of patient flow management,

* Higher revenue because of more effective billing, and

* Lower audit risk because of more effective coding and SOAP note compliance.

4. Professional Presentation

Experienced presenters engage the audience and clearly relate key messages. The material is delivered in small and easily digestible portions and accompanied with clear demonstrations using state-of-the-art Vericle technology.

5. Benefits

* Effective meeting: Webinars eliminate phone tag, email overhead, and inconvenience of paper memoranda.

* Reduced cost: Webinars eliminate travel, hotels, facility rentals and catering. Typical fee is $200-$300 for program materials and access to live webinar or its recording.

* Improved reach: Webinars help reaching a large audience instantly regardless of physical distance between the participants.

* Intuitive interaction: Internet software allows presenters and attendees to interact and collaborate through live polls, question and answer periods, and document sharing. This allows getting a pulse on coding difficulties or Vericle feature priorities.

* Easy access: To attend a medical billing webinar, you need a phone number, login, and password, which you receive upon paying registration fees.

* Simple user interface: Standard web browser and phone are sufficient for participation. There is no complex functionality to learn to join the webinar.

* Followup: Upon completing the webinar, the attendees can always followup with a question over email or phone or register for the next webinar to reinforce understanding of the material.

* Promotion: The webinar is advertised on several websites and specialized magazine ads. Additionally, each communication with a registrant includes “invite-a-colleague” link.

* Simple registration: Medical billing audit webinar allows registration online, regular mail, phone, email, and fax, depending on participant’s preference.

Doctors and practice managers are looking for cost-effective and productive ways to learn better ways to manage their practice and revenue cycle. Increasing frequency of post-payment insurance audits and mounting severity of penalties, ranging from license suspension to heavy monetary fines, emphasize the need for effective and affordable education about compliant office management and audit risks. The key benefit of the webinar is its convenience - there is no travel required and important information is delivered in ninety-minute sessions that make it easy for even the busiest doctors to quickly gain important information on topics ranging from successfully implementing EMR systems, to understanding the real benefits and challenges of outsourced billing services, risk management of post-payment audits, and much more.

Six Reasons Why Distance Learning Makes Sense

More and more people are finding that knowledge really is power, and that they can accomplish their education goals online.

Best of all, these online learners are finding that degrees from accredited colleges and universities are increasing their earnings potential, giving them greater responsibility in their professions, and best of all - giving them the chance to accomplish a key goal without completely interrupting their existing lives.

There are many reasons to consider distance-learning programs for your goals. Instructors who have taught distance-learning courses originating in the United States to Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Europe, report these as the top reasons distance learning makes sense:

# Make a strong future from investing time today - Many of distance learning students are on assignment in foreign countries, and while working full-time on their jobs, they use their evenings and spare time to earn bachelors and masters’ degrees that have a direct impact on their future job opportunities and professional advancement.

# Certify your knowledge - Many distance learning students have years of experience in their professions, and just lack of college degree that proves their knowledge. Distance learning gives these working professionals a chance to share their in-depth knowledge while at the same time earning degrees that illustrate their expertise.

# Get to your educational goals on your timetable - While distance learning programs have scheduled classes online and you interact with instructors, you can move as quickly as you want through many courses. Likewise, many instructors will work with you if something comes up in your life that takes time away from school.

# Pick up more marketable skills- The depth of distance learning courses has become impressive in recent years, thanks to the Internet’s performance increasing in many parts of the world - and most importantly - schools offering courses that deliver skills immediately marketable.

# Start a new career - Distance learning is great for anyone looking to get into an entirely new field - one that they have been looking at for years, or one that has sparked their interest lately - in either case distance learning gives anyone the flexibility to take their careers in entirely new directions without stopping their lives in the process.

# Connecting one-on-one with instructors - Learning on-line gives students the opportunity to interact with their instructors to a greater depth than is typically possible in larger, more traditional classroom settings.

Bottom Line: Distance Learning is growing by 33% a year worldwide according to market estimates from International Data Corporation and the U.S. Department of Education. Universities worldwide are working to tailor their programs for this exciting new approach to learning. Chances are there are programs available today that will get you to your educational goals.

Tips on Lesson Planning for the New Teacher

Depending on the school you work for, you may be required to turn in lesson plans weekly or biweekly. Some schools may require a scope and sequence that covers the majority of the year. However you are required to turn in lesson plans, make sure that you have clear objectives, goals, and a way of evaluating the students and assessment.

For me, the difference between objectives and goals was a little confusing. Think of it like a road map. An objective is your final destination and the goal is how you are going to get there. For example, in my English classroom my objective for a lesson may be for students to be able to write a report on Maya Angelou and my goal would be for the students to research the poet and memorize one of her poems. Objectives are general and goals are specific.

Whatever you end up doing in the classroom it has to be tied to the lesson objective. Instructional devises, teaching resources, and assessment should be linked to your objectives.

When thinking of a good objective, pay attention to the students that the objective is intended for and the type of performance you want. One objective I used in an English lesson was “Students will list and describe each step of the writing process.”

A good objective includes good verbs. In my experience it is best to use action verbs or verbs that can measure performance. Passive words make your objective appear weak. I have found that most objective should begin with “Students will be able to…” Avoid the use of such phrases as “Students will realize…” or “Students will enjoy…” Phrases such as “Students will be able to compute…” or “Students will be able to list…” are much stronger and make for a better objective.

After you have created your objective, think about your lesson plan procedures. Procedures are the body of a lesson plan. Procedure is how you will present information to your students and how you will find out if they have learned and processed that information.

A basic lesson plan has three parts: the opening, developing of the lesson, and closing. The opening of you lesson should be motivational and engaging. A good opening will settle the students down quickly and get them focused. I would typically begin class with a journal entry, question or even a puzzle that was related to the content we were going to cover that day. Some other great ways to open the lesson is with maps, models, or a demonstration.

When developing a lesson it is never a good idea to assume what a student does or does not know. It is important to spend some time early in the year discovering what prior knowledge your students have. A great strategy to use in assessing prior knowledge is to do some diagnostic testing of your class in the beginning of the year. There are some wonderful tools online that can help or maybe your district does diagnostic testing. This strategy is invaluable when trying to assess what your students know.

When getting into the main portion of the lesson, tell the students exactly what they will be taught and what they will learn. If you state the lesson objectives, students will have a better understanding of what is expected of them and what direction you are going to go in during the lesson.

As you go through your lesson you may consider such procedures as explaining how the day’s lesson relates to other lessons, use a graphic organizer to show the important points of the lesson or by reading material. Procedures are the portion of the lesson where you are teaching and students are learning.

It is important to bring closure to your lesson. You may have students summarize lesson points or have them engaged in an activity.

When the lesson is over it is always a good thing to evaluate yourself. Ask yourself such questions as, “How was my pacing?” or “Did I make good use of class time?” Self-evaluation is a good way to improve your lessons and overall teaching.
